In the summer of 2011, The Franklin Center of Beaver County will pilot a one-week pre-medicine summer camp in partnership with the Keystone Education and Simulation Center (KSEC) in Potter Township, Beaver County. KSEC is a state-of-the-art medical simulation facility which will expose students to the lastest technology in medical care. The facility includes simulation activities in home health care, pharmacy, emergency/trauma care, family practice, surgery, dentistry, and obstetrics/gynecology. The purpose of this summer program is to expose students to various medical careers and environments in the safety of a simulated environment. As part of their experience, students will also complete a First Aid/CPR/AED certification program.
This program is tentatively scheduled to take place in August 2011. The programs goals are as follows: to give students practical exposure to various medical careers and enviornments; to provide students with a state-of-the-art learning experience; and to connect core academic skills in math, science, and communication with a real world experience in medicine.
The programs objectives are as follows: all program participants will receive their First Aid/CPR/AED certification; participants will master basic medical tasks such as administering a shot, taking blood pressure, using a defibrillator, basic would care, etc.; and to increase participant knowledge of basic medical terms and concepts by10%.
